Close up picture of child painting with homemade fingerpaint.

This homemade fingerpaint is super easy to make and the smooth fluffy texture is perfect for sensory play activity. It calls for soap flakes commonly used for laundry which gives it an amazing smell as well.

Setting up for fun.

Whenever possible it is a good idea to have your child help with making their own art supplies. Even the process of making this homemade finger paint can be a fun learning experience. So if you would like to have your child help with the mixing process make sure to premeasure all the ingredients before starting to avoid any large spills. If you have an older child they can help with the premeasuring process. I have an 11 year old a preschool age child and a toddler at home right now. I like to have my 11 year old help measure things when cooking or crafting.

Mixing the paint.

Add in the water first stir a little and the add in the liquid starch. mix until the flakes are dissolved, you may need to add a little more water to fully dissolve the flakes depending on the size of the flakes. I like to leave them a little un dissolved to add a little lumpy texture the the fingerpaint. It’s fun to squish the small soap flakes while painting. We started mixing with a spoon and the switched to a whisk to get it a little fluffier.

Adding some color!

Divide the white finger paint into smaller bowls and add food coloring to each bowl to create any color you like. I like to do Two primary colors and the color they make when mixed. So we did blue, yellow, and green, but you can do any combination you want. you can also leave the paint white and have your child paint on a darker colored construction paper.

Or you can have your child paint directly on a washable surface, or put the paint into a sensory bin to play with. Lots of fun options with this project.
